From SirsiDynix, with Love: A Love Letter to Libraries Everywhere

Briana Shemroske

Happy Library Lovers’ Day!

To express our gratitude for library professionals and our enduring belief in the extraordinary power of libraries, we present a series of valentines—from SirsiDynix team members to you, your colleagues, and libraries everywhere.

Start reading below and be sure to check back later for more. We’ll be compiling library love letters through February 28 and keep professing our love for libraries for, well, all time.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for all you do.

I love that my library offers a safe space for everyone—especially the most vulnerable members of my community. Whenever the library is open, my community knows that we have a warm, clean, well-lit place to rest and learn, regardless of the struggles we may face outside those doors. I also love that my library offers 10 free pages of printing to all patrons each day!

I love the fact that I get to work on software that benefits libraries and their patrons. My local library is a refuge from the noise and distraction of the world. Even if I am not physically inside the library, the library is with me, because I can check out e-books and escape the worries of the day in the comfort of my home. Libraries are so essential to our mental well-being. I know I'd be a little less sane without a library nearby!

My family loves our local library. We love that they have so many children's books, weekly movie nights, and the Makerspace. One time, my child's school couldn't 3D print the vase she designed in class because of its size, so we brought the CAD design into the library Makerspace and they were able to help us 3D print it.

The library (any library), has always been sanctuary, and so in a very real way, sacred: a place you can go, no matter what circumstances life is presenting, to nourish and entertain the higher faculties of our multifaceted selves. What could be more Divine. Whatever prognostications pundits might offer about how our world will evolve, I'm confident that as long as we are here, Libraries will be also.
